Yesterday, Queens Borough President Sharon Lee presented proclamations to two individuals —  FreshDirect Driver Trainer Charlie Cruz and Harry Smith of The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey — in honor of their contributions to the community during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

FreshDirect Driver Trainer Charlie Cruz (pictured second from left) has delivered 61,600 grocery boxes to Queens Borough Hall every day since March 24 for distribution across 147 community-based organizations throughout Queens. In honor of his efforts to address food insecurity, Cruz was honored with a proclamation declaring September 30, 2020 as “Charlie Cruz Day” in the Borough of Queens.

The Port Authority’s Harry Smith has worked on a number of initiatives over the past six months, including distributing more than 15,000 grocery boxes across Queens, as well as delivering supplies donated by IKEA to domestic violence shelters, hot meals essential workers as part of Fuel the Frontlines, and wreaths donated by BP Lee to the sits of Memorial Day observance ceremonies throughout the borough.

In honor of Smith’s dedication to serving Queens, October 1, 2020 was declared as “Harry Smith Day.”
