Yesterday marked New York’s in-person primary election, as voters lined up to cast their ballot for for president, Queens borough president, Congress, State Senate, State Assembly and other local races.

Results from the scanners came in following poll closures at 9 p.m. last night, but we’re still waiting on tens of thousands of absentee ballots, some of which were postmarked as late as last night.

Due to the pandemic and safety concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, the governor allowed for mail-in voting, and many New Yorkers requested absentee ballots. We won’t know until sometime next week who the winners will be, but unofficial Board of Election tallies show incumbent Rep. Grace Meng leading reclaim her position in the 6th Congressional District, which represents Forest Hills, Rego Park and Kew Gardens.

As of early this morning, Meng emerged far ahead of her opponents with 15,181 votes, making up 60.98 percent.  Behind her is community organizer Melquiades R. Gagarin, who previously worked as a congressional aide for former Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Gagarin has taken 21.13 percent of the vote thus far, followed closely by Sandra Choi with 17.34 percent.

In the race for Queens borough president, City Councilman Donovan Richards is leading with 41,915 votes, good for 37.2 percent, with 96 percent of precincts reporting.

Trailing him is former City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, who has 31,781 votes, or 28 percent. Astoria Councilman Costa Constantinides is now in third, with 17,164 votes, or 15 percent, neck and neck with Anthony Miranda, with 14.7 percent. Dao Yin has 4.5 percent of the vote.
