Beer in the Gardens – Good brews for a good cause

On Sunday, October 2, the Church-in-the-Gardens, Brewminaries and local breweries will host the first annual “Beer in the Gardens” brew-tasting event. The event will benefit the Face to Face Project, an international anti-poverty nonprofit working in Cambodia and Malawi.
Members of Church-in-the-Gardens, Dianne and Alex Kalaf, serve on the church’s World Service Committee and were motivated to work with the organization after seeing the success of their projects overseas.
Face to Face Project has been recognized by the United Nations for their humanitarian work.
World Atlas recently ranked Malawi as the poorest country in the world. Facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the country’s history due to massive food shortages caused by maize harvest failures, the organization has initiated a Victory Garden campaign to help Malawi citizens.
A group of local villagers are taught how to grow high-yield, no-cost dense gardens near their homes, and then they teach what they’ve learned to their neighbors and families.
Founder and executive director Ken Wong hopes to have 100,000 people benefit from the campaign by the end of 2017. The organization will be present at Sunday’s event, Kalaf said, and they will have an area where people can sponsor children overseas and give them an education.
“Everything that they do goes towards what they’re supporting,” she said. “It’s amazing what they’ve done in Malawi with teaching and how they’ve helped villages with the growing of crops.”
Local breweries who have donated beers so far include Finback Brewery, Kings County Brewers Collective, Big Alice Brewing, Greenpoint Beer & Ale, Singlecut Beersmiths and Interboro Spirits and Ales.
