What Professions Are High Risk for Varicose Veins?

Spider veins and Varicose veins are the result of blood pooling together in specific parts of the veins. The valves within the veins get weaker due to pressure and are unable to promote full circulation. When this happens the veins enlarge and are visible through the surface of the skin. They are usually found on the legs but are possible nearly anywhere.

Although there are several causes that we won’t go into here, one of the most common is standing or sitting for long periods of time. One of the most common places that this occurs is at work because of the nature of our jobs, and the fact we spent so much of our waking hours there. Varicose vein specialists always encourage people to change positions and allow for optimal circulation.  Here are the professions that are considered high risk for Varicose Veins.

Teachers

Teachers are one profession that is considered high risk for Varicose veins. Due to standing in front of the classroom lecturing, they can easily let too much time pass without promoting circulation. As it turns out they can also sit for long periods of time, for example, reading, monitoring the classroom, or grading papers. Sitting and standing are high risk

Hairstylist and Barbers

Hairstylists and barbers are two professions where they stand for long periods of time. Considering a haircut from start to finish can take an hour, all it takes is 4 haircuts in a row. Female hairstylists especially in salons might be even at higher risk if they wear restricting shoes or high heels.

Nurses

Nursers as you can imagine, work very long hours, often in 12 hours shifts. And they can be on their feet virtually the entire time. This is a high-risk activity for spider veins and varicose veins.

Bus, Taxi, and Truck Drivers

Bus, Taxi, and truck drivers are in the opposite position of nurses. Drivers often spend very long periods of time behind the wheel sitting. The driving position is made worse with the lower seat, and lack of movement in the lower legs.

If you already have spider veins or varicose veins then you should contact a local vein specialist soon than later, and stop swelling at its source!
