Activists, peacekeepers and community leaders will unite on Jan. 21 for a conversation around technology and peacekeeping for the 10th annual Peace Week Queens Town Hall.
Held in the Queens Borough Hall atrium, the Community Town Hall is a flagship Peace Week event that brings compelling conversations around wellness and exploring innovative ideas in the mission of making peace a lifestyle. This year’s Town Hall will feature an interactive community expo, live performances and a community conversation around the impact of recent criminal justice reforms in NYC with Queen District Attorney Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President Sharon Lee, Melva Miller and LIFE Camp founder Erica Ford.
Today, LIFE Camp partners Facebook and Globetops are donating 50 laptops to support LIFE Camp’s violence reduction and intervention programing. Nineteen percent of households in LIFE Camp’s catchment area has no access to internet and three percent have limited connection online. The laptops will increase programming LIFE Camps offers to Southeast Queens and neighboring communities- from finance literacy programs to graphic design and programming, to basic computer literacy.
The laptops will also play a crucial role in LIFE Camp’s work to ensure Southeast Queens is counted in the 2020 census.
Annually, Peace Week creates a citywide culture of peace for seven days, from Jan. 15 – Jan. 22, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of non-violence. The initiative encourages this mission by hosting events, performing activities or simply taking one personal action toward creating inner peace and setting a positive example for young people.
Peace Week asks that everyone take the pledge for peace by vowing to show gratitude to others on a daily basis, stop, think and breathe before doing things, take personal responsibility/awareness of one’s actions, and give back to others and one’s community. By committing to take these actions for one week consecutively, the hope is to continue these practices for a lifetime.
Today’s town hall takes place at Queens Borough Hall (120-55 Queens Blvd.) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
