According to the Department of Health, the city will spray parts of Queens, including Forest Hills and Forest Hills Garden, from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
While there is no Zika virus found or no Zika transmission from local mosquitoes, the Health Department will spray the pesticide to reduce mosquito activity and the risk of
Zika and West Nile viruses. The neighborhoods that will be sprayed have a significant amount of Aedes albopictus, or Asian tiger mosquitoes. Aedes albopictus can carry the Zika virus but is not responsible for the outbreak in Latin and South America.

The Health Department said that the neighborhoods to be sprayed have also met sufficient criteria for truck spraying of adulticide – an increase in West Nile virus activity as well as high numbers of Culex mosquitoes that have been known to transmit West Nile virus in New York City since 1999. These mosquitoes are not known to transmit Zika virus.

The following neighborhoods are to be affected: Briarwood, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Forest Hills Gardens, Glendale, Jamaica, Jamaica Hills, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hill, Maspeth, Middle Village, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, and Ridgewood.

For the sprayings in Queens and Brooklyn, the Health Department will use very low concentrations of DUET™ and Anvil® 10+10. When properly used, these products poses no significant risks to human
health, according to the Health Department.

To minimize direct exposure, try to stay indoors during spraying, especially those with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Also remove any toys or outdoor equipment so they won’t be exposed. If you have the air conditioning on, you can reduce the possibility of indoor exposure by putting the vent to a closed position or choosing the re-circulate function.
