New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day was quite busy for the Forest Hills neighborhood.
On a sad note, Austin Street’s Barnes & Noble closed its doors on December 31. The local bookstore had been in the community for 20 years. A petition created by the local community to prevent the closing gained some traction with nearly 6,300 signatures. However, developer Muss Development still went ahead with plans to open a Target in the location. The new Target store will open sometime in the new year.
Meanwhile, the community has good news to celebrate. A Forest Hills couple welcomed one of the first NYC babies of 2016. At exactly midnight, Daneilla Malakov gave birth to a baby boy at Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center. The baby has not been named yet.
