The city’s COVID vaccine rollout should be called "Operation Warped Speed"
for its pathetic results.
Mayor Bill de Blasio initially vowed that one million New Yorkers would be vaccinated this month, but less than 170,000 people received shots by the end of the first week of January.
Compare this sad situation to a smallpox outbreak in 1947, when six million New Yorkers were vaccinated in one month without the benefit of today's technology and medical advances.
One reason for this swift success was that private physicians quickly received vaccine doses. As a seven-year-old boy, I was vaccinated by my neighborhood doctor in Kew Gardens Hills.
Private physicians are not part of the COVID vaccine distribution loop, even though they are primary health care providers for many New York residents. Only two New Yorkers died of smallpox in 1947.
COVID has killed over 350,000 people nationwide, a grim statistic that approaches the World War II military fatality rate of 405,399 U.S. soldiers.
We're fighting an invisible enemy that's kicking our butt, how can we
reverse this war's tide of tragedy?
