Celebrate Independence Day with activities in Brooklyn and Queens

Celebrate America’s independence with several fun events happening around Brooklyn and Queens. From family-friendly events to adult-only soirees, there’s something for everyone. Have a good time with music, fireworks, food and the classic Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest!

Independence Day Celebration + Fireworks - Thursday, June 27 - 7:30 p.m. - Great Lawn at Astoria Park, Shore Boulevard between the Hell Gate Bridge and the pool - This free annual Astoria event is the perfect kick off to the July 4 festivities. Grucci puts on a spectacular fireworks display, which will be preceded by live music from the Queens Symphony Orchestra.

The event, which is organized by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition, celebrates 35 years this year!

Omar’s Fourth of July Block Party - Thursday, July 4 - 2 to 6 p.m. - Fantasy Forest Amusement Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park- One of the most popular family-friendly events happening in Queens is Omar’s Fourth of July Block Party. A party hosted by Omar Olusion, come celebrate the holiday weekend with live DJ music, dance contests, fun games, and magic shows.

Omar’s unique mix of creativity, passion, amusement, and magic will keep guests of all ages on their feet and entertained! Admission is free but enjoying the attractions at the amusement park will cost a small fee per ride.

Elsewhere 4th of July - Thursday, July 4 - Starting at 2 p.m. - 599 Johnson Avenue, Bushwick - Rock out to some music at this seasonal outdoor bar and events space. Special Fourth of July performances at Elsewhere include JD Samson, a DJ set from Photay, Rimarkable and Kfeelz B2B DJRaqx. The performances will go from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The roof deck closes at 1 a.m. Tickets are $15-25 and are for those 21 years and older.

Fourth of July Celebrations - Thursday, July 4 - All Day - Coney Island, Brooklyn - Head out bright and early to catch the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at 10 a.m. Joey Chestnut consumed 74 hot dogs at last year's contest while Miki Sudo won the women's competition with 37. Stick around the area, either at the beach, Luna Park, local eateries or the New York Aquarium, and at 9:50 p.m. you’ll be treated with the Steeplechase Spectacular fireworks display.

YES July 4th Extravaganza! - 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. - House of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Ave., Bushwick - Move your body as House of Yes gives you dancetastic music, day drinking, courtyard sunshine and hot tub surprises! Resident DJs will be blasting summer jams and offering delicious food from hot dogs to vegetarian options.

If you love costumes, here’s your opportunity to go all out! Those wearing costumes will have special treats, including skipping the line! FYI, tickets are free before 5 p.m. with an RSVP (bit.ly/2KAPL58) or are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Unobstructed Fireworks Display - Thursday, July 4 - 4 p.m. to midnight - 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, 60 Furman St., Brooklyn Heights - Want to avoid the masses and still have unobstructed views of the fireworks? Well, you can attend the Harriet's Rooftop & Lounge Viewing Party. After booking with the hotel, your ticket will either include bottle service and canapés or a pre-fixe dinner and a premium open bar as part of the Osprey Viewing Party.
