Though he just started playing pickleball five months ago, Brownsville Recreation Center member Winston Mitchell is a fan of the game.

“It’s good for the mind, the body and everything,” he said.

He’s now part of the Brownsville Old-Timers team, which will compete in the third annual Senior Games, hosted by the Parks Department.

Mitchell was among dozens of seniors who participated in a pickleball clinic in Brooklyn last week, where he surveyed the competition and met some fellow players.

“We’re tough,” he said. “We like to compete.”

Mitchell also teaches table tennis at the Brownsville rec center, and is part of the Brownsville Strikers Table Tennis Club, which boasts 100 members. They play the sport everyday, and compete all over the country.

He has been trying to recruit more men from the table tennis team to join the pickleball team, which is currently made up of mostly women.

“It’s growing and we’re loving it,” he said. “They will have a lot of fun, and it’s good for the body.”

Mitchell said he liked pickleball because of the movement, which is similar to lawn tennis. The practice, along with the quickness, technique and strategy, will also help him in table tennis.

Though he missed the Senior Games two years ago because he was out of the country, he participated last year, and was happy with the outcome.

“Last year was a lot of fun, and we did very well,” Mitchell said.
