Dear Editor,

There is absolutely no logical reason for the Department of Education to deny paid parental and maternity leave to its teachers. Practically all other city employees have already been granted this right.

The leadership of the United Federation of Teachers needs to fight aggressively for this as it prepares to negotiate a new contract for its members, a contract that should also be void of any givebacks. New York City teachers have given back enough over the years.
