St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds was chosen by Big East coaches as Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Ponds, a consensus four-star recruit and ranked 36 in the class of 2016 according to ESPN, comes to St. John’s following a standout career at Brooklyn’s Thomas Jefferson High School, where as a senior he led the Orange Wave to its first PSAL title since 1954.

In the championship game against local powerhouse Abraham Lincoln, Ponds proved that he can play under the brightest of lights, scoring a game-high 31 points to go along with 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists at Madison Square Garden.

A First Team All-State selection and the 2015-16 New York Player of the Year according to USA Today High School Sports, Ponds averaged 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists per game as a senior, propelling Thomas Jefferson to a New York State Class AA Federation Championship. 

In the federation semifinal, he poured in 27 points against Long Island Lutheran before tallying 16 points and seven boards in the title tilt against Aquinas Institute.
