SAVE rooms

Dear Editor,

Retired teacher Howard Chustek is right that there are far better alternatives available to educators in dealing with unruly students than corporal punishment (“Spanking in schools a bad idea” - 11/13/18).

Under state school safety law, teachers are empowered to remove defiant or disruptive students from the classroom and send them to a SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) room staffed by a licensed pedagogue who will provide instruction.

Unfortunately, in too many schools SAVE rooms exist in name only and the state law is not implemented properly. Expect this to change now that the UFT contract requires that system-wide standards for school safety be consistent with applicable state law.
