If their rivals sharing a stadium wasn’t bad enough, three is certainly a crowd for the New York Red Bulls. As Major League Soccer gears up for the return of the regular season, two clubs have gone to the Red Bulls in search of a temporary home.

Following a thoroughly entertaining “MLS is Back” tournament, clubs are returning to their home markets for Phase 1 of the regular season restart. Eighteen games are scheduled for each team, aside from FC Dallas and Nashville SC, who withdrew from the tournament at the last minute.

To make up for the matches missed, the two will play three additional matches against each other.

New York City FC had already played a couple of “home” games at Red Bull Arena, hosting AD San Carlos and Tigres UANL in the Concacaf Champions League earlier this year.

With the Yankees schedule condensed and Yankee Stadium off limits for non-baseball activities, City has once again been pushed across the Hudson River to their rival’s doorstep.

Joining NYCFC and RBNY is another Eastern Conference powerhouse. Facing a similar dilemma as the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto FC has been forced south of the Canadian border for home games.

Just a couple of weeks after being eliminated from the restart tournament by NYCFC, Toronto will now share Red Bull Arena not just with the Red Bulls, but with their growing rivals as well.

The Red Bulls campaign in the tournament did not fare well, with New York crashing out of the group stage after a lackluster performance.

With pressure mounting to turn around their season and rebuild the clubhouse vacated by Luis Robles and Bradley Wright-Phillips, the Red Bulls could use the competition of their new roommates as inspiration.

The Red Bulls and NYCFC open up the restarted regular season with a Hudson River Derby on August 20. In their first contest of the season, both sides look to establish early dominance in a shortened and chaotic 2020 season.
