Kickstarter raises funds for ‘The Jim Henson Exhibition’

The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to complete preparations for “The Jim Henson Exhibition,” which will open later this year.

Henson is a puppeteer and producer most known as the man who created “The Muppets.” He also worked on “Sesame Street,” “Labyrinth,” “The Dark Crystal” and “The Muppet Show.”

In just two days, the target goal of $40,000 was surpassed after donations poured in. The museum is now stretching to a $100,000 goal in order to restore more puppets in the collection.

As of Wednesday, the campaign raised nearly $93,000. The campaign will be opened until May 11.

The collection features puppets from all of Henson’s work for film and television, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Scooter from “The Muppets” as well as Big Bird, Elmo, Count von Count, Grover, Cookie Monster, Prairie Dawn, Ernie and Bert from “Sesame Street.”

There will also be rare puppets from Jim’s television commercials and other early work in the 1950s and 1960s, including Yorick from “Sam and Friends,” the LaChoy Dragon, Wilkins and Wontkins, Sir Linit, Taminella Grinderfall, the “Java” puppets and the Tastee Freeze Boss.

“While Jim Henson may be best known as the inventor of the Muppets and so many other memorable characters, our exhibition takes a more holistic view of his contributions as a producer, director, innovator, and creative leader who worked with an impressive team of collaborators,” said MoMI Executive Director Carl Goodman. “In that spirit, we are honored to be working with the designers and builders at the legendary Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to restore and preserve the puppets for future generations.”

In addition to the puppets, the permanent exhibition will feature behind-the-scenes footage and photographs, puppet prototypes, performance experiences and original character sketches.

"MoMI’s campaign is a great example of how a leading cultural institution can use Kickstarter to connect with Jim Henson fans around the world, and together support an exhibition that will honor the legacy of this truly visionary creator,” said Shane Brennan, Kickstarter's art engagement strategist.

In May, MoMI will also launch a traveling version of the exhibition, “The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited,” which will tour around the country and the world. The tour will kick off at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture.
