Covenant Ballet Theatre presents the Orphan Train & Other Dances. The Orphan Train (one hour ballet) is one of the 11 narrative works in the company’s repertory that was conceived and choreographed by its founder and Artistic Director Marla Hirokawa. From 1854 to 1929, over 250,000 abandoned and neglected New York City children boarded trains headed to the new West in search of homes. Conceived by Reverend Charles Loring Brace, founder of the New York Children’s Aid Society, this placing-out program was a response to the fast growing breed of children who were being forced onto the streets because of overcrowding, pestilence, abandonment and neglect. Base on this true story, the Orphan Train ballet follows Brace’s journey as he crafts out a future for Mamie, little Bessie and sisters Susie and Dorothy. "Fully realized, impressive ballet. Stark reality is wonderfully conveyed by this fine company of actor/dancers who with a look or a gesture augment the excellent choreography." FringeNYC review. The evening also showcases dances selected from the Dancing Side by Side Project (directed by Matthew Westerby) with Covenant Ballet's Junior company in collaboration with Brooklyn's Edward R. Murrow High School students.
